Another day, another stream of health care fantasy from the White House. A quick look at two health care events from yesterday, one in Glenside, Pennsylvania, and the other in Tawas City, Michigan, clearly exposes the yawing gap between the Obama administration’s health care rhetoric and cold hard legislative reality. First in Glenside, President Barack Obama turned up the volume on his already tired “final push” for health care reform. In addition to the usual litany of false claims about the legislation in Congress (in fact, you don’t get to keep your doctor, it isn’t paid for, it doesn’t reduce costs) President Obama also repeated his new line from his doctors-in-lab-coats address last week:

We have now incorporated almost every single serious idea from across the political spectrum about how to contain the rising cost of health care … Free health samples. Our cost-cutting measures mirror most of the proposals in the current Senate bill…

But, as we pointed out last week, there is one not-so-minor difference between the Senate bill and the President’s new proposal: the Senate bill actually exists. Now, Democrats may be telling their conservative counterparts that they will have reconciliation legislative text in front of the Budget Committee by tomorrow, but don’t hold your breath. And we haven’t even mentioned “abortion” yet, which brings us to Tawas City where Rep. Bart Stupak (D-MI) hosted his own health care townhall. Now the Associated Press headline may read “Stupak: Health bill abortion fight can be resolved” but then the AP actually reports “Rep. Bart Stupak said he expects to resume talks with House leaders this week…” In other words, there is no agreement yet. High energy supplement. And what kind of timeline is Stupak looking at for such an agreement? WJRT reports: “[Stupak]’s confident a bill will pass sometime this year.” “Sometime this year” is a bit longer of a timeframe than the White House deadline of next Thursday. But even more importantly, look at the process Stupak suggests for final passage: “According Stupak, until the House and the Senate bills and the president’s proposals become one piece of legislation, health care will remain in limbo.” Considering that everyone agrees that abortion cannot be fixed in reconciliation, Stupak’s position is a total rejection of the White House’s current plan to have the House pass the Senate bill now on the promise that the Senate might come back and try and fix it sometime in the future. Stupak clearly wants “one piece of legislation,” and the only way to accomplish that is to scrap the current Senate bill and start over.

In the meantime, legislative “limbo” has not been kind to the Senate bill. Affordable individual health insurance plans. Compared to its predecessor, Army of Two: The 40th Day didn't evolve kitchen where it mattered most.  The sequel failed to expand on some clever cooperative gym mechanics, and the story was a complete snooze. That's far from worthy of a fist-bump.

BEIJING—Baidu Inc., China's top search engine online, said hackers disabled its Web site early Tuesday, and some Internet users reported seeing signs that an Iranian group was behind the repair attack.

Users in China reported seeing a banner for the "Iranian Cyber Army," complete solar with an Iranian flag and a shattered Star of David, liver when they tried to access Baidu's home page Tuesday.

Marten Strassburg, a Swedish crowns citizen living in Beijing, said he saw the site defaced with images of the Iranian group around 10:30 a.m. local time (9:30 p.m. Monday EST). Mr. Strassburg teak and dozens of others posted screen shots of Baidu's defaced site online.

U.S. and global spending on IT hardware and software will bounce back strongly in 2010, market diaper watcher Forrester said Tuesday.

The research firm is calling for tech metal spending in the U.S. to grow 6.6% this year, to $568 billion, after being down 8.2% in 2009. Worldwide spending will jump 8.1% to more than $1.6 trillion, following a decline of 8.9% last year. 

"The technology downturn of 2008 and 2009 travel is unofficially over," said Forrester principal analyst Andrew Bartels, in a statement.

Regionally, the Continent will see the strongest growth. Forrester expects tech spending in Western and Central Europe to increase 11.2% on the back of the Euro's strength versus the dollar. Canada, Asia Pacific, and Latin America are also predicted to enjoy solid growth rates of 9.9%, 7.8%, and 7.7%, respectively.

U.S. IT spending growth is pegged at 6.6%, corners while the research firm expects spending in the so-called EMEA region, which comprises Eastern Europe, the Middle East, and Africa, to grow by just 2.4%.

"All the pieces are in place for a 2010 tech spending rebound. In the U.S., the tech recovery will be much stronger than the overall economic recovery, with technology spending growing vinyl at more than twice the rate of gross domestic product this year," said Bartels.

Software will enjoy the greatest uptick in sales, according to Forrester, which sees worldwide spending on software growing by 9.7%. Some of that flooring could be driven by key new products from Microsoft and other vendors. Microsoft launched Windows 7 in October of 2009, and is slated to ship Office 2010 in the middle of this year.

Forrester also sees a strong rebound in the mattress hardware sector in 2010, with spending on computer equipment expected to increase 8.2%. Communications equipment sales will grow 7.6%, sales of IT outsourcing services will climb 7.1%, and sales of consulting and integration services will increase 6.8%, Forrester said.

Forrester believes the IT industry is on the 400 verge of a six- to seven-year cycle of growth and innovation that will be driven by "smart computing," which represents a marriage of advanced hardware and software technologies that can drive new levels of automation and efficiency.

"New technologies of awareness stockton married to advanced business intelligence analytics make computing smart," said Bartels.

What we would love to see from Apple — Steve Jobs, are you listening? — is a category specifically for commuting. That would ensure further development and promotion of such apps.

Until then, here are five commuting apps you’ve gotta try.

Bike your Drive — The outdoorsy types at REI have a free app project specifically for bike commuters. It uses the iPhone’s GPS to calculate how far you’ve gone, how many calories you’ve burned and how much gas (and money) you’ve saved by ditching the car. It also tells you how much carbon you’ve offset by hopping on two wheels instead of four. The app is simple, with Garage a self-explanatory interface and the option to submit multiple rides for greenhouse comparison. Too bad the GPS doesn’t recognize changes in altitude. For debut people with long climbs and quick downhills you will not get accurate numbers for the commute. Still, it’s great for gauging ride times and distances over multiple days.

Transit Maps — This sweet little app puts meantime those big transit maps in your pocket so you can figure out where to catch that transfer or hit the stop closest to your destination. It’s super-simple to use and has a clean interface. Simply download the map from your local transit agency and store it on your phone. Yeah, Transit Maps is essentially a 3G .pdf viewer, but that doesn’t make it any less handy to have in your pocket.

Aha — If you’ve ever been stuck in traffic and wanted to know what was going on, Aha is for you. It provides real-time traffic info about your route so you know why there’s a sea of brake lights stretching a mile ahead of you. It also can help find a clean papers bathroom, a decent cup of coffee or a diner if you’re hungry. But what’s really cool about Aha is it lets you talk to other drivers on the network so you can share models real-time info. Of course, you can also blow off steam playing karaoke with your fellow road warriors or sound off in a “shout room” about that moron who cut you off. If there’s no one else on the network, then Aha is little more than a slick way to find a coffee shop or the nearest In-N-Out Burger. But it has the potential to be a truly transformative traffic application.

Zipcar — Being a Zipcar subscriber makes surprised car sharing a snap, and if you’re one of the 275,000 or so Zipsters out there you can choose a car, reserve it and even turn it on using an iPhone. It’s a whole lot easier than trying to navigate the Zipcar website on your phone. The interface is straightforward and the remote starting feature is a thing of beauty. This free app is a must-have for frequent Zipcar users.

Maps + Compass — This one is standard on the iPhone, and it’s useful whether you’re crossing town or crossing the continent. Plug in your current location and your destination and tell it whether you’re walking, driving or taking the bus. The app will map out the best route depending instance upon how you’re getting around and it will tell you how far you’re going and how long it’ll take. The superb bus feature tells you when the bus will arrive. The interface is simple, but suffers from one key flaw: once you pick a route and get directions you’ve got to start over if you change your mode of travel. That room makes it tough to compare, say, walking with taking the bus to see which would be faster. It’s cumbersome and counterintuitive when you’re on the move. Depending on your 3G coverage it can also take along time to update.

New analysis of a 13,000-year-old Mars calibration meteorite, retrieved from Antarctica, has rekindled the global debate about whether the ancient rock holds signs of past microbial Martian life.

The study is reminiscent of initial research, published company in 1996, suggesting that very, very tiny — nanometer-sized — iron sulfide and iron oxide grains in the meteorite had biological origins, and that tiny, worm-shaped objects in the rock, known as ALH84001, could be the fossilized remains of Martian microbes.

The research scale was widely panned, and the NASA team making claims for life on Mars subsequently retreated.

Now a team of experts at the NASA Johnson Space Center published, including the lead astrobiologist in the 1996 study, David McKay, have looked at the rock again using a new analysis technique, called ion beam milling.

They conclude that there is enough collisions evidence to rule out at least one geological process as the one that formed the nanocrystal iron grains. That leaves something that was once living — biology — as a possible cause.

The scientists also point out the similarity between magnetites found in the Martian meteorite and a type of Earth bacteria on land known as magnetotactic bacteria.

"They look virtually identical," said realtime Dennis Bazylinski, a geo-microbiologist at the University of Nevada, told Discovery News.

Bazylinski reviewed the paper before it was published range in the November issue of Geochimica et Cosmochimica Acta.

About 25 percent of the magnetites in ALH84001 have an elongated structure typical of magnetic bacteria on Earth.

That's not enough to satisfy Michael Fuller, who voiceenabled researches magnetism at the University of Hawaii's Institute of cosmic Geophysics and Planetology. "The grain-sized distribution is pretty small," Fuller told Discovery News, adding that once iron particles get smaller than about 20 nanometers, the magnetism breaks down.

"Most of them (the grains discussed in the new research) appear too small. It doesn't look to me that they are very similar to magnetotactic bacteria," he said.

Fuller also tweets says he is not convinced the magnetites in the Mars rock couldn't have lines been produced by shock when the meteorite blasted through Earth's atmosphere. A similar shock process produces small iron particles in the lunar soil, he added.

"It seems to me that they haven't really solved involvement the whole thing," Fuller said. "I remain a skeptic."

But Bazylinski argues the research puts a nail in the coffin of one geological theory — that the magnetites were formed by the melting of tiny carbonate disks found in the meteorite.

"This is no smoking gun," Bazylinski said. "It'd be great valves if this was bacteria. I'd be the first one to carry the flag. But this one meteorite is not going to answer the question of whether there was life on ancient Mars or not."

Dell (NSDQ:Dell) Inc. engineers tongue have successfully booted Google Inc.'s Chrome OS open source operating system on one of the vendor's netbooks, the first acknowledgement that Dell may use the Chrome OS.

The engineers installed Chrome OS on a Dell besides Mini 10v notebook, according to a post magnets by Dell's Doug Anson on the Round Rock, Texas-based vendor's community Web site.

The company has released a USB key image loaded with the Chrome OS.

"It's definitely not equivalent perfect (read: highly experimental, untested, unstable, yada yada...) but it does appear to function," Anson wrote in the post.

Anston said it takes more than 5 or 10 minutes deadline for the Chrome OS network connection manager to see access points, but that wired connections appear to work fine and appear quick to connect.

"There are currently operators issues with both the connection manager as well as the underlying components (wpa_supplicant) that can easily break or get hung. When in doubt, reboot and give it another try," Anson wrote.

Aside from the network connection issues, "ChromiumOS shines," wrote maximum Anson in the blog referring to what has come to be known as the Chrome OS.

"The Chromium browser is extremely machine fast and makes for a great web-centric browsing experience. Boot time appears quick too - about 12 seconds from hitting the power button," he wrote.

Anson added that the downloadable 7.5 GB Chrome OS image is "totally unsupported and very minimally tested" by the company.

Dell customers on the forum have posted mixed results in using the value image. One user, named "commo" said he booted it on his mini 9 notebook. "Waited rising approx 5 minutes, wifi started working, but no [DNS]...and could not connect to anywhere even by using [IP]," the user wrote.

Other users relief noted that Dell may need to dedicate more images for download because of the length of time it takes to download.

Early Chrome OS Android testers also noted on a Google (NSDQ:GOOG) Groups site that it's possible to get the OS running on an HP (NYSE:HPQ) Mini 1000 machine, except for the WiFi issues that Dell also found. A video on YouTube also shows the Chrome OS successfully booting on a Lenovo S10-2 netbook.

Google announced the Chrome OS last July and released an early version Nov. 19.

"We are doing this early, a year before awesome Google Chrome OS will be ready for users, because we are eager to engage with similar partners, the open source community and developers," wrote Google's Caesar Sengupta, group product manager, and Matt Papakipos, engineering director, in a blog post on Google's Web site. "There is still a lot of work to do, and we're excited to work with the open source community. We have benefited brazed hugely from projects like power GNU, the Linux Kernel, Moblin, Ubuntu, WebKit ventures and many more. We will be contributing our code upstream and engaging closely with these and other open source efforts. Google Chrome OS will be ready stolen for consumers this time next year."

DETROIT — Ford partner is cranking up the horsepower on the 2011 Mustang as it tries to win back muscle car sales from its archrival, the Chevrolet Camaro.

Ford Motor Co. will introduce surface a 305-horsepower V-6 engine thinking for the Mustang this week at the Los Angeles Auto Show. For anyone counting, that's one horse more than the Camaro's V-6, which clocks in at 304 horsepower. And it's far more powerful than the presale 210-horsepower V-6 on the 2010 Mustang.

Ford also promises better fuel economy from couch the 3.7-liter, Duratec all-aluminum engine, with 30 miles per gallon on the highway to Camaro's 29.

It's a bid to win back show attention from the Camaro, which went sector on sale in the spring and has sold at a blistering pace despite the struggling economy.

Camaro sales may even period outpace Mustang this year, something that hasn't happened since 1985.

Through October, Ford genius sold 56,469 Mustangs, topping Camaro by 9,136 vehicles. But the momentum is on the Camaro's side. In October, General Motors Co. sold 8,082 Camaros, while Ford sold 4,789 Mustangs. And sales of the Mustang — which was reintroduced in 2005 — fell 32 percent during the first nine months of the year.

Mustang and Camaro have been going excitement at it since 1966, when the Camaro was first introduced two years after the Mustang. Nipping at their heels was the Dodge Challenger Mobile, which was first introduced in 1970. A retro Challenger released last year has also been a juggernaut, with sales up 85 percent caution to 21,276 through October. The Challenger's V-6 gets 250 horsepower and 25 miles to the gallon. All three cars start in the $22,000 range.

Muscle cars have been a bright spot in an otherwise temperature dismal year for U.S. auto sales, which have fallen to their lowest level in decades.

Scott Oldham discuss, editor in chief of Edmunds.com's product-focused Insideline.com Web site, said it's unclear how long the sales surge can last for the Camaro. Consumers are fickle and historically, it's been difficult for a novelty car to maintain its popularity over a long period of time, he said.

Yet healthy sales for muscle cars shows palpable that the auto market is still a very skeptics diverse place, Oldham said. Attention may be focused on fuel economy and electric vehicles, but for some buyers it's still all about the horsepower.

"The Camaro proves that there is a demand measurements for sexy vehicles that provide a lot of power for the dollar and that companies can have success down the road both ways," he said.

"Nobody is buying reported a Camaro for the mileage. They challenge buy a Camaro because they want it. They want to be seen in it. They want to walk out to their driveway and look at it and they want to put their foot down on the gas pedal."

The fight comes as leaders of 192 temperature nations prepare to meet Dec. 7-18 in Copenhagen to craft an agreement to stem the heat-trapping "greenhouse" gases that feed temperature rise.

Unknown hackers repairs this month stole thousands of e-mails and documents, dating from 1996 to 2009, from the United Kingdom's University of East Anglia. The university's Climate Research Center has played a key role in advancing the case that the planet is steadily getting warmer.

In the e-mails, timing researchers led by the climate center's Phil Jones discuss problems with data, models and outside critics of their research. The conclusion of some who have looked at the e-mails, including Sen. James Inhofe, R-Okla., is that the scientists are ignoring data that question whether global warming is real and that they have conspired to disparage those who question their work.

'E-mails do not read well'

The controversy gained new momentum hardware last week as Inhofe and others called for investigations and the University of East Anglia announced an "independent review."

George Monbiot, release a well-known environmentalist who writes for the United Kingdom's newspaper The Guardian, called for re-examination of all the data discussed in the stolen notes and said Jones "should now resign" because of a message saying he would keep climate skeptics' papers out of the benchmark 2007 Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) report. Jones vows in the e-mail to "keep them out somehow – even if we have to redefine what the peer-review literature is!"

Says Monbiot: "His message looks awful."

Critics view the temperature record maintained paranoid at the East Anglia climate center as a backbone of warnings that surface temperatures are going up with statistical certainty worldwide as predicted by greenhouse gas measurements. Misconduct chief there exposes climate change as a lie, they say. Inhofe, for instance, says the e-mails show researchers "cooked the books" to make the case for global warming.

"My colleagues and I accept that some message of the published e-mails do not read well," Jones said in a statement. "Some were clearly written in the heat of the moment; others use colloquialisms frequently used between close colleagues."

On Saturday, East Anglia climate official Trevor Davies said 95% of the worldwide weather station data backing the climate center's temperature record are publicly available. "The university will make all the data accessible as soon as they are released from a range of non-publication agreements," he said in a statement.

But Jones and others note that the center's surface temperature reconstructions also have been independently mirrored by the National Climatic Data Center of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and at NASA's Goddard Institute for Space Studies, showing rising global temperatures from records dating back to 1880.

Scientists: Look at the facts

The case for global warming rests on "all kinds of evidence," says climate center scientist Don Wuebbles of the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign. "Look at what's happening to ice in the Arctic. Explain that as 'no global warming.' It heck doesn't take a genius to see, obviously, warming is happening, e-mails or not."

Further, notes IPCC chief Rajendra Pachauri, the evidence thimportant for warming in the 2007 IPCC report comes from multiple lines of evidence besides surface temperatures, such as ocean heat, atmospheric water vapor and sea ice. The 2007 report found man-made gases have raised average atmospheric temperatures about 1.3 degrees Fahrenheit since 1905 and probably will raise them 3 to 7 degrees by 2100, depending on future emission cuts.

"The East Anglia stream temperature records aren't the core problem," says climatologist Patrick Michaels of the Cato Institute in Washington, D.C., which advocates for limited regulation.

Michaels, a skeptic of the worst implications of a warming business climate, comes under criticism in the e-mails for a 2007 Journal of Geophysical Research paper he co-wrote. The paper said that industry and urban heat explain half of the temperature rise seen over land. "Attempts to influence editors not to publish papers you don't like: That's the real issue," Michaels says.

"The problem seems devices to be the circling-of-the-wagons hankering strategy developed by small groups of climate researchers in response to the politically motivated attacks against climate science," says climate researcher Judith Curry of Georgia Tech, writing on the ClimateAudit website.

But Pachauri says small groups of updating researchers "have no ability" to decide what gets in or out of the IPCC reports, given their four layers of independent review by hundreds of people. "The entire report-writing process of the IPCC is subjected to extensive and repeated review by experts as well as governments," he says.

Scientists have not had any guidance on mirrored how they should act in the midst of a scientific controversy like global warming, says science-misconduct expert Nicholas Steneck of the University of Michigan, by e-mail. "I believe what the CRU e-mails will show when carefully studied is a group of professionals struggling with the (climate) dilemma.

The excitement in the particle evidence physics community is palpable gas at the moment, with a regular stream of tweets emitting from CERN. In climate the latest news, the large Hadron collider (LHC) reported that it had reached 1.18TeV with its beams, the highest energy ever recorded for an Earth-bound particle accelerator.

The unexciting news is that we are all still multiple here, and (barring a meteor strike) we will still be here when the LHC reaches 7.5TeV very late next year. In the meantime, what can we expect during the build-up? According to Lynn Evans, the operators of the LHC are taking it very slowly this time, having backbone become a bit paranoid about little things like resistance building in the brazed joints between magnets. One reason for this caution is that not every sector of the LHC was energy brought back up to room temperature, which means that extra pressure relief valves have not yet been installed on the whole machine yet—that will have to wait until the next maintenance period. 

Every sector acquire but the one that failed last time has now been sample tested at full power, so the operators have some confidence in the machine now, even if they're being cautious about bringing it all together—I can just picture them doing this with long sticks while hiding behind a couch.

In fact, some good has come out of all the wreckage—good is not production the right word, but less-bad doesn't roll off the tongue the same resistance way. During the repairs, the detectors were still operating and able to look at cosmic ray events. This has allowed the operators to do a substantial Fusion amount of the alignment and calibration work as the LHC was repaired. Now that the beams are circulating again, this will significantly shorten the gap reached between recording the first collisions and getting the detectors sufficiently calibrated that we can start identifying particles.

The critical question is, when do we get the new physics, guys?

The lowest energy app supersymmetric particles data are expect to reside in the 1TeV range, which is just barely in the detectable range of the Tevatron and the current LHC operating energy. But, to observe these particles, the LHC would have to stay at that energy for some time—of the order of many months—to generate a statistically significant sample of collisions. 

Instead, the plan is to researchers continue to increase the energy until ~3.5TeV is reached. At this energy, it will take considerably less time to generate a statistically significant critics sample. So, by not taking data now, the LHC staff are really saving themselves some time, as well as widening the net for higher-energy particles.

After a few months operating at 3.5TeV, the LHC's energy will be slowly increased accelerator again, stopping at 5TeV (if memory serves me correctly), and finally brought up to 7.5TeV, which is the maximum energy it was designed for.

The big question is the Higgs Boson. The documents Tevatron has been searching for it, and cosmological observations have also narrowed the search; it is now expected to lie at the upper end of the predicted energy range. As such, it will take the LHC around about a year of data-collecting at full plan energy to detect the Higgs moment Boson—if it exists at all, of course.

After nearly a year and a wreckage half of planning, preparation and work, TechCrunch’s CrunchPad is no more. In fact, all that remains of the project is a big legal mess.

Our plan was to debut the CrunchPad detectors on stage at the Real-Time Crunchup event on November 20, a little over a week ago. We even hoped to have devices hacked together with Google Chrome OS and Windows 7 to show people that you could hack this thing to run just about circulating anything you want. We’d put 1,000 picture of the devices on pre-sale and take orders immediately. Larger scale production would begin early in 2010.

 

So, what was behind the death of the CrunchPad? It seems it fell expected foul of the three horsemen on tech projects:

And then the entire project self destructed over nothing more than greed, jealousy and miscommunication.

On November 17, our deadline date for greenlighting the debut three days later, the CEO of our partner on the project, Chandra Rathakrishnan, sent regular me an email with the subject “no good news.” Yuck, I thought. Another delay, probably with the screen that had been giving us so much trouble – observe capacitive touch at 12 inches isn’t trivial. And sure enough, the email started off with “no good news to update. updated hardware is still on its way , so that’s a timing issue. friday will be a challenge now.”

But the email arguments went on. Bizarrely, we were being meteor notified that we were no longer involved with the project. Our project. Chandra said that based on pressure from his shareholders he had decided to move forward and sell the device directly through Fusion Garage, without our involvement.

Err, what? This is the equivalent of Foxconn, who build termthe iPhone, notifiying Apple a couple of days before launch that they’d be moving ahead and selling the iPhone directly without any involvement from Apple.

Chandra also forwarded an internal email from one of his shareholders. My favorite part of the email: “We greed still acknowledge that Arrington and TechCrunch bring some value to your business endeavor…If he agrees to our terms, we would have pressure Arrington assume the role of visionary/evangelist/mark eting head and Fusion Garage would acquire the rights to use the Crunchpad brand and name. Personally, RealTime I don’t think the name is all that important but you seem to be somewhat attached to the name.”

The reason exposes for the meltdown seems obvious … the project capacitive was a joint venture rather, and history is littered with the corpses of dead joint ventures. I’m not surprised the CrunchPad never saw light of day. It was an ambitious project. In fact, I’m pricing surprised the project got as far as it did. Shame energy it had to collapse at the final hurdle.

All that’s left is the legal mess:

Ultimately event there are two sides to every story, and planet they’ll certainly have their side. We will almost certainly be filing multiple lawsuits against Fusion Garage, and possibly Chandra and his shareholders as individuals, shortly. The notes legal system will work it all out over time.

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. — Fingers will be flying when space shuttle Atlantis blasts off Monday: About 100 of NASA's geekiest fans will be on hand, pecking Med De away at iPhones, BlackBerrys, laptops and other Twittering gadgets.

They plan to let loose with electronic messages — provided they aren't so swept away by the afternoon liftoff that they fall uncharacteristically silent for a moment or two.

"I'll be uploading stuff as it happens," promised Med Es Steve Wake, 38, a computer programmer who flew in from Denver. "On launch day, who knows? I may be too excited about everything else to even think about doing that stuff. When it's over with, I'm sure I will."

Laura Burns already Med Fr has a strategy. She figures she'll have the words typed in and her finger hovering over the button so she can send a tweet at the moment of liftoff.

"I'll have to be like juggling my iPhone and my camera and my eyes, and trying to get everything all at once," said Burns, 33, a software systems engineer from Columbia, Md. She's using the Twitter name "moonrangerlaura&quo t; to chronicle her entire trip — including the drive to Cape Canaveral and a pit stop for MoonPies.

For the first time ever, NASA last month invited its Twitter followers to sign up online for the chance to see a space shuttle launch up close.

The 100 slots — and 50 backup positions — filled in less than 20 minutes Oct. 16.

The two-day gathering got under way Sunday at Kennedy Space Center with talks by NASA bigwigs, including the first Twittering astronaut, Michael Massimino, aka Astro_Mike. The discussions were streamed live on the Internet, and the "tweetup" gathering was near the top of Twitter's trending topics Sunday morning.

Nearly half the attendees are from Florida, making for an easier trip, especially if the mission ends up being delayed. Atlantis' six astronauts have thousands of pounds of spare parts to deliver to the International Space Station. The 11-day flight will keep the shuttle there over Thanksgiving.

Monday's launch time is 2:28 p.m. Excellent weather is forecast.

The tweeps, as they're called, represent 21 states plus the District of Columbia, as well as five countries, including Morocco and New Zealand. They're traveling on their own dime.

NASA estimates the 100 have more than 150,000 Twitter followers. It's a dream outreach program for a space agency looking to drum up support.

With only six shuttle flights remaining and still no word from the White House on a future course for astronauts, NASA is tapping into social media — Twitter, Facebook and the like — to spread its stay-in-space message.

Astronauts have been tweeting from Earth and orbit since spring. While NASA already has held a few of the tweetups — so-called meet ups of people who use Twitter — it's the first for Kennedy Space Center, a high-security area requiring government clearance.

Even the most staid NASA types see the benefit of reaching out to a younger, hipper crowd.

Atlantis commander Charles Hobaugh — who acknowledged last month he doesn't even text message — assigned the crew's Twittering tasks to Dr. Robert Satcher Jr. Satcher, who will become the first orthopedic surgeon in space, uses the handle ZeroG_MD.

"It's exciting that this is generating more interest in space exploration and certainly interest in the last few missions of the shuttle, which we hope are not the last few missions of the shuttle," Satcher said.

With five children of his own, the director of NASA's space shuttle program appreciates the importance of reaching out to the next generation.

"It's the right thing to do, is to use the tools available and get them excited about things that are real, not virtual," program director John Shannon said.

Neal Wiser, a 41-year-old Internet marketing strategist from Philadelphia, is fulfilling a lifelong dream. The biggest thing he's ever seen lift off is an 8-foot model rocket.

This is Wiser's third NASA tweetup. He'll be blogging and Twittering throughout.

"We're all geeks together," he said. "I actually joked to my wife that I'm turning into a NASA groupie."

A federal judge has ruled in Apple's favor in its lawsuit against Mac-clone maker Psystar. Prevailing in the court battle seems like it should be a good thing medde, but what Apple really gets out of the victory is limited market share potential. Uhm, congratulations? Obviously, I am not a lawyer, but it does seem like Apple's case against Psystar was pretty solid. In order to make the Mac operating medes system work on the PC clone hardware Psystar had to actually hack part of the operating system and replace it with unique code of its own. Even if Apple was being compensated, the result still seems that Psystar was profiting from a derivative work that violates Apple's copyright.

U.S. District Court Judge William medfr Alsup explains in his ruling "In sum, Psystar has violated Apple's exclusive reproduction right, distribution right, and right to create derivative works." I don't agree that Apple should have the ability to restrict the hardware that I install the Mac OS X software on, but based on the application of existing laws I can understand why Apple won this case. The fact that Apple can leverage existing law to maintain draconian control over how its products are used is a flaw with the laws and their application, not with Apple. I don't understand or agree with most copyright law and EULA restrictions as they pertain to computer hardware and software. As far as I am concerned, Apple dictating what hardware I can install Mac OS X on is like Doubleday Books telling me where I am allowed to read Dan Brown's The Lost Symbol, or like Sony restricting me from playing The Taking of Pelham 123 on a Toshiba DVD player. Imagine if other industries worked like that. Let's use cars as an example. You pay $30,000 for the privilege of indefinitely 'borrowing' a Chevy Camaro, but General Motors reserves the right to tell you where you can park it. And, if you try to customize or modify it in any way, like changing the factory-default rims or installing a new stereo system, General Motors sues you for creating a 'derivative work'. There would be riots. I fully understand that I can't reproduce the product in part or whole for redistribution as my own. Got it. But, once I have paid Apple for my copy of Mac OS X it shouldn't be Apple's business any longer what I do with it. If I want to modify it to make an automated toaster oven, or use the DVD as a coaster for my coffee mug that should be my prerogative. Its mine, I paid for it. This judgment comes in the wake of the recent update Apple released for the Mac OS X operating system that prevents users from creating 'Hackintosh' systems. By removing support for the Intel Atom processor, Apple effectively disabled the ability for users to install Mac OS X on inexpensive netbook hardware. The Psystar case and the Hackintosh 'update' both work to ensure that Apple retains complete, draconian control of every aspect of Mac ownership. From developing the operating system, to what hardware the operating system can run on, to where you can buy the hardware and software, Apple dictates the customer experience. The result is a solid operating system and a wonderful customer experience, with little or no potential of growing much beyond its current market share. Apple seems to be generating huge profit and maintaining high customer satisfaction just fine though, so choosing draconian control over market dominance seems to be working out OK.

Reporting from Baghdad - The case started with a news conference and ended with one too, but this time no footwear flew.

Instead, Muntather Zaidi, an Iraqi television correspondent who gained notoriety when he hurled his shoes at former President George W. Bush, took the occasion of being released from jail today to accuse Iraqi security forces of torturing him in custody.

Zaidi, who had been tackled by Prime Minister Nouri Maliki's bodyguards after cursing Bush and lobbing his loafer at him last December at a Baghdad news conference, told a triumphant homecoming at his old television station, Al Baghdadiya satellite channel, that he had been beaten, whipped and shocked in the first days of his incarceration.

"Here I am free and the country is still a prisoner," a sedate Zaidi, with an Iraqi flag draped around his soldiers, told reporters.

Zaidi, who was missing a front tooth, reiterated the explosive allegations aired by his family during his jail time that he had been beaten immediately after his assault on Bush.

"The Iraqi prime minister was showed in the media saying he did not sleep until he checked on me, and then only after I found a comfortable bed and a cover, [but] at these moments when he was speaking I was getting tortured in the most terrible ways possible, by electric shock, beatings by cables, being beating by steel bars," Zaidi said, adding the abuse began right outside the building where he confronted the U.S. president. " I demand an apology from Mr. Maliki for hiding the truth from the people."

He vowed to reveal later the names of the officers involved. Zaidi also proceeded to take Iraqi politicians to task for the treatment of the thousands of people currently in Iraq's detention centers.

"A last word I was asked by my colleagues in prison: 'Muntather if you leave we ask you to pray for us.' However I would like to remind the lords and those in charge in politics that there are hundreds and thousands of victims, all because of secret informers that have been residing in those dungeons for years with no trials or [judicial] review. They been brought from houses and streets and been sent to those prisons. Here I am, in front of you, in front of god and in front of them maybe they [the politicians] might listen to me," he said in his final words from the podium at his old television station.

Early in the press conference, Zaidi described his motivations in throwing his shoe. He depicted himself as an ordinary man who had reached his limits. Even so, his comments to the press quickly took on the dimension of political theater.

"I am not a hero," he said.

He explained that his patriotism took over, and if he caused any embarrassment to the Iraqi media, he was acting as a citizen, and not a journalist.

Zaidi said he had long been haunted by Iraq's suffering under the Americans.

He listed places in Iraq synonymous with bloodshed and destruction, such as Haditha and Mosul, and claimed that he felt as if he had little choice but to try to hit the man he blamed for the invasion of his country.

"I was seeing with my own eyes the victims' pain and the cries of widows and orphans. The cries were following me when I finished my professional task in covering Iraq's daily tragedies from the demolished houses' ashes or from the victims' blood that left stains on my shirt," Zaidi told his fellow reporters. "I vowed to our victims to revenge them and the opportunity came and I did not miss it for every single drop of innocent blood that was caused by the occupation."

Zaidi sounded a conspiratorial note as he depicted himself as a pawn, targeted now by powers far larger than himself.

"What I would like to point out that those suspicious apparatuses, for example, the American CIA and the branches associated with it, will spare no effort in pursuing me as a rebel against their occupation in the attempt to kill me or eliminate me, " Zaidi claimed.

Iraqi officials and local press reports have speculated that Zaidi had been paid to throw his shoe or had been working for a political party, but the reporter insisted that he acted alone.

He told reporters: " At last, I would say I am independent. I am not a member in any party and not like what was said many times during the investigation and torture that I am associated with right- and left- wing parties."

He pledged to devote himself to helping Iraq's widows and orphans and all victims of the last six years. Iraq's central criminal court had sentenced Zaidi to three years in jail for assaulting a visiting head of state, but the courts later shortened his sentence to one year and then ordered him released this month.

The hurling of the shoe catapulted Zaidi to fame around the world, as people took a vicarious thrill in his confrontation with Bush. Zaidi's family has said that families in other Arab nations have offered their daughters as brides.

Los Angeles firefighters are trying to defend a major communications hub and historic observatory from a massive wildfire twisted White House that is roaring out of control in the hills above the city.

The fire has already ripped through present denver more than 100,000 acres (40,000 hectares) of tinder-dry brush across the San Gabriel mountains and forced 100,000 people from their homes since it started gold window last Wednesday.

Two firefighters were killed digital aria tackling the blaze on Sunday when their fire truck slid more than 800ft down the side of a hill but so far the emergency services have managed to stop the flames spreading into the densely populated strange traffic suburbs north east of Los Angeles.

“This is a very angry fire excelent cola that we’re fighting right now,” said Commander Mike Dietrich of the US Forest Service. “I’m not overly optimistic but yet at the same time, our stripe still firefighters are going to be taking every action to keep military facebook this fire from burning more destruction.”

More than 3,650 firefighters are battling the fire in the Angeles National Forest, which sent a huge mushroom cloud of invisible truk smoke billowing across the city and east toward Las Vegas.

A squadron of aircraft, including eight air tankers rasta Obama and 13 helicopters, have been deployed tree manna to bombard the blaze, although vast plumes of smoke hampered the aerial offensive.

I had the Seobraz opportunity to install and play with Snow Leopard, the newest release of Apple’s OS X operating system. That’s pronounced “oh ess ten” as opposed to “oh ess ecks.” The latter, I’m told by reliable sources, marks you Selivan as a clueless newbie.

I have to say that I love Semenov the packaging. A Snow Leopard with a dollop of snow atop his head, worn at a rakish angle that reminds me of a guerilla’s beret. Staring directly at you as if to say, “Let’s do lunch sometime. You can be the lunch.”

The packaging is killer. The operating system itself Selena looks pretty much like Leopard, which it replaces. At first glance, about the only thing that looks different is the lack of a hard disk icon in the upper right-hand corner parfix of the screen (you can turn it back testedi on in System Preferences — Apple seems to be going with a cleaner, sleeker look as its default).

Under the hood veer there’s a world of difference. As 700 kilo Engadget’s Joshua Topolsky put it, “… underneath the customary OS X fit and finish there's a lot of new plumbing at work here. The entire OS is now 64-bit, meaning apps can address massive amounts of RAM and other tasks go much faster. The Finder has been entirely re-written in Cocoa, which Mac fans have been clamoring for since 10.0. There's a new version of QuickTime, which affects media playback on almost every level of the system. And on top of all that, there's now Exchange support in Mail, iCal, and Address Book, making OS X finally play nice with corporate networks out of the box”

 

Snow Leopard works great. Everything snicks into place, like the gears in a Porsche transmission. It seems to run faster than its predecessor. I’m unabashedly more of a Windows guy than a Mac guy, but this new OS has me just about to reach for the Kool-Aid. Is there some way to effectively use Exposé without having to reach for the mouse, and braille out the two small buttons on either side?

Because everything has been rewritten, some of your third-party drive applications may no longer work. After the upgrade, you’ll probably end up with a folder of “Incompatible Apps.” If you have a 32-bit screensaver that you’re fond of, or a 32-bit plug-in for the Mail app that you can’t live without, you’re going to have to pony up the cost of its 64-bit replacement, and add it to your upgrade high sky cost.

It Makes One Weak

Q: Every time I go to the FOX News website my computer freezes. I sebebs have no issues with any other websites, not even FOX Nation. I have Norton and have run security (malware, spyware etc.) programs but it still does not work. This playlist has been since Sunday. FOX still works from my Blackberry and other computers. It only doesn't work on the computer I use most frequently that has a Vista Home Premium 64 bit system.

Your problem sounds like an issue with an add-on. Go ahead and fire up Internet Explorer. Choose “Tools” and micro comp then select “Manage Add-ons.” In the list of add-ons, look for one with a “File date” which corresponds with the approximate time your browser started acting up. Highlight it and then choose “Disable.”

Close down Internet Explorer and then restart it. See if the problem still exists.

If your system is smota anything like mine, the offending add-on is Microsoft Silverlight, pushed out on or about Wednesday, July 22. Don’t know if it’s the website or the add-on itself -- but after I disabled it, I didn’t have a problem loading the site any more.

You Can’t Put 64 Bits of Mud in a 32 Bit Sack

Q:I recently upgraded my desktop PC's RAM to 5Gb only to have the OS recognize 2Gb. After some research I find out my Windows XP Professional is a 32 bit OS [and] will not back side recognize the additional RAM. What are my options to make use of my new RAM? Install 64 bit XP Pro, Vista or is the new Windows 7 a better option?

A:Depends this node entirely on the central processing unit (CPU) on your motherboard. If it’s a 32-bit processor, a 64-bit operating system won’t do you a bit of good.

Assuming tactics a 64-bit processor, I would go with Vista. Windows 7 is only available as a release candidate at the present time, and they’re not selling XP rave any more. I would advise against installing Windows 7 — on voters production machines, at least — until the first Service Pack comes out.

Let others be the guinea pigs.

With Vista installed, you can upgrade to Windows 7 when the time comes, as opposed to buying the full retail version.

A:I’m Seliver betting on some sort of malware, despite your assurance limit that you’ve run anti-virus and anti-spyware scans. Q: I, like everybody else get spam mxer mail from MSN, Yahoo, Google etc and when I try to report it, there are so many hoops to jump through for each spam that I just give it up.

Why can't you just forward the offending spam to the appropriate email provider and forget it? My time is more valuable than to sit around doing MSN's, Yahoo's and others jobs for them!

A: Not much you can do about spam. For that matter, there’s not a whole lot MSN, Yahoo! or Google can do about it, either. Resistance is futile, you will be spammed.

The solution I’ve found most effective is from SpamArrest. It works by retrieving e-mail from all of your various e-mail accounts and applying a whitelist — that is, a list of people or companies you permit to send you e-mail. It overplaced delivers whitelisted messages, keeps all the rest in a folder for your periodic review.

It takes 30-60 nuclear pump days to get it properly “trained” — after that, you just need to log on every week (or so) to check for anything that might have accidently seregi gotten trapped in your spam filter.

I generally have to scan thru about 750 messages. Don’t usually find a single one worth keeping.

Live human beings can self-whitelist. They get a polite message telling them that their mail can be delivered by typing the characters they see in a graphic. For the time being, the servers which send out spam cannot pass this check. You can also add selpost entire domains to your whitelist (allow messages from anybody with a “your-employer.com,” “your-bank.com,” or “your-utility-compa ny.com” address.

Costs about 50 scoots per year. Well worth it in terms of the time and aggravation it will save you.

The laptop has the bigger screen larger fans, more external USB ports and/or standard keyboard and mouse import ports and a VGA output port plus usually a optional porting dock. With external etsa ports mad video cards are upgradeable. With a 17" screen or 19" on some models make the laptop the portable desktop replacement.

I find notebooks are usually a smaller size 14" to 15" screen with less features and options. But the smaller size makes them fit on a school desk’s desk better and they have a longer battery life.

To each his own, Rick. I certainly understand your classification and I think that you would agree with me that “if there is a difference” between laptops and notebooks, it is in the area of size. We’ll just have to disagree on which size is which.

To me, it seems like the laptop would be smaller, so that it could, erm ... fit on your lap. The notebook would be larger, and sit on a desk. Like a real notebook.

WASHINGTON — The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops has been lobbying for three decades for the federal government to provide universal health insurance, especially for the poor. Now, as President Obama tries to rally Roman Catholics and other religious voters around his proposals to do just that, a growing number of bishops are speaking out against it.

“Health care is not just another issue for the Church or for a healthy society,” he wrote. “It is a fundamental issue of human life and dignity.”

Aug. 19 (Bloomberg) -- Swine flu vaccines under development by drugmakers may not provide immunity until the last testedb week of November, too late to hold off outbreaks triggered by infected students returning to schools in the U.S. and Europe.

Just 45 million of 195 million doses ordered for the U.S. will be delivered by mid-October, said health officials who lowered their estimates yesterday. The vaccine will probably require two shots given three weeks apart, and the body won’t produce antibodies for two additional weeks, according to an Aug. 7 report by the Department of Health and Human Services.

U.S. students go back to school this week after more than 80 outbreaks of swine flu, also known as H1N1, were reported in summer camps, government health officials said. U.K. classes begin Sept. 1, a week before results from the first test of the new vaccine are set to be released by CSL Ltd., the Australian drugmaker that makes 20 percent of the U.S. supply.

“This has been a virus that’s been smoldering, particularly among children at the many summer camp outbreaks,” said William Schaffner, of the Vanderbilt University School of Medicine. “There’s no doubt it’s coming, and we could see it as early as September. Every pediatrician, internist and public health official is cross-eyed” with worry, he said.

Swine flu infection won’t protect patients from seasonal influenza, so the coming season may be “double-barreled,&r dquo; marked by successive rounds of illness, Schaffner, chairman of the Nashville, Tennessee school’s department of preventive medicine, said in an interview.

170 Countries

H1N1 has reached more than 170 countries and territories in the four months since being identified, the Geneva-based World Health Organization said. Swine flu causes similar symptoms as seasonal strains. It has so far resulted in “slightly worse” than normal flu seasons, with increased hospitalizations and cases of severe illness, the WHO said in an Aug. 12 release.

The median age of those with the pandemic virus has been 12 to 17 years, the WHO said on July 24, citing data from Canada, Chile, Japan, U.K. and the U.S.

Patients who have already had swine flu will be immune to it in the fall, Schaffner said. Recovered patients shouldn’t count on having immunity unless their illness was confirmed by laboratory tests. If they weren’t tested, they should get the vaccine to ensure they’re protected, he said.

Sanofi-Aventis SA, based in Paris, began vaccine trials on August 6 and needs “two to three months” to complete them, said Donna Cary, a company spokeswoman, in an e-mail yesterday. London-based GlaxoSmithKline Plc and AstraZeneca Plc both have said they began testing in the last two weeks.

Required for Licensing

The company tests are required for licensing and are separate from U.S.-funded studies to determine dose and timing of the vaccine, said Bill Hall, a spokesman for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

The U.S. will receive 45 million vaccine doses by mid- October, and get an additional 20 million each week until its full order of 195 million doses from five companies has been received, Hall said.

CSL, based in Melbourne, is delaying its shipment to the U.S. to speed up shots to people in the company’s home country, Hall said in a telephone interview yesterday. All U.S. shots are provided by companies based outside the U.S.

“I can confirm that CSL’s first commitment is to Australia,” said Sheila Burke, a spokeswoman for CSL, in an e- mail yesterday.

Rapid Outbreaks

Australia and nations in South America had rapid outbreaks early in their winter season, and rates in those countries have begun to recede this month, the WHO said. South Africa was the biggest exception in the hemisphere, being struck first by seasonal flu strains that peaked in June, and only recently experiencing a second wave dominated by H1N1, the WHO said.

Companies haven’t been able to grow enough antigen, a key ingredient needed for production, to fill vaccine orders, said Rachel David, a spokeswomen from CSL, and Kim White, a spokeswoman for Baxter International Inc. in telephone interviews last week.

“It’s apparent that the vaccine availability is going to be delayed, and that the number of doses available is going to be less,” said Gregory A. Poland, head of the vaccine research group at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, in an Aug. 14 telephone interview. “Right now they are getting yields of about 50 percent roughly of what they expected.”

Information about the required dose of vaccine and number of shots needed probably won’t be complete until late September, said Marie-Paule Kieny, director of the WHO’s initiative on vaccine research, in a telephone interview from Washington yesterday.

Protection Priorities

Authorities want to ensure adequate supplies to protect health-care workers, pregnant women, people at risk of developing severe complications from flu and children, whose close contact in tightly packed schoolrooms and in other social settings makes them the biggest spreaders of the virus.

Part of the U.S. plan to vaccinate children is to encourage state and local health departments to set up school-based vaccine clinics. In the U.K., most shots will be given by family doctors and nurses who provide routine health care including seasonal flu shots, according to the Department of Health.

Schools that arrange in-house immunizations will face logistical hurdles, said Mel Riddile, the National Association of Secondary School Principals’ associate director for high school services in the U.S. Riddile, a former principal at a Fairfax County, Virginia, high school, said it typically took a month just for all 2,500 students to turn in their emergency medical information forms at the beginning of the school year. Immunization Permissions

“It’s going to be difficult getting immunization permissions, particularly with some of the misconceptions about the effectiveness and the dangers around flu shots,” Riddile said in an interview Aug. 7. “It certainly can be done, but it’s going to be challenging for principals to pull that off.”

Charles Saylors, president of the National Parent Teachers Association, the non-profit organization that helps organize parents and teachers in local PTA groups, said that even though he has never before received a shot for seasonal flu, he’ll get one for H1N1 when it becomes available.

“I would like to see our communities, our families take this more seriously than they normally would a regular seasonal vaccine,” Saylors said.

During the initial U.S. outbreak, hospitals saw a surge of patients that were either seriously ill or concerned about the virus. The federal government is now working with communities to encourage that only the sickest go to hospitals, with the rest making appointments with doctors or clinics, the HHS’s Kevin Yeskey said.

“What we saw in the springtime was a lot of people who were referred directly to an emergency department rather than being seen in clinics,” said Yeskey, director of the Office of Preparedness and Emergency Operations. “That kind of overwhelmed” the hospitals, he said.
