Geeky 'tweeters' to report on space shuttle launch
CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. — Fingers will be flying when space shuttle Atlantis blasts off Monday: About 100 of NASA's geekiest fans will be on hand, pecking Med De away at iPhones, BlackBerrys, laptops and other Twittering gadgets.
They plan to let loose with electronic messages — provided they aren't so swept away by the afternoon liftoff that they fall uncharacteristically silent for a moment or two.
"I'll be uploading stuff as it happens," promised Med Es Steve Wake, 38, a computer programmer who flew in from Denver. "On launch day, who knows? I may be too excited about everything else to even think about doing that stuff. When it's over with, I'm sure I will."
Laura Burns already Med Fr has a strategy. She figures she'll have the words typed in and her finger hovering over the button so she can send a tweet at the moment of liftoff.
"I'll have to be like juggling my iPhone and my camera and my eyes, and trying to get everything all at once," said Burns, 33, a software systems engineer from Columbia, Md. She's using the Twitter name "moonrangerlaura&quo t; to chronicle her entire trip — including the drive to Cape Canaveral and a pit stop for MoonPies.
For the first time ever, NASA last month invited its Twitter followers to sign up online for the chance to see a space shuttle launch up close.
The 100 slots — and 50 backup positions — filled in less than 20 minutes Oct. 16.
The two-day gathering got under way Sunday at Kennedy Space Center with talks by NASA bigwigs, including the first Twittering astronaut, Michael Massimino, aka Astro_Mike. The discussions were streamed live on the Internet, and the "tweetup" gathering was near the top of Twitter's trending topics Sunday morning.
Nearly half the attendees are from Florida, making for an easier trip, especially if the mission ends up being delayed. Atlantis' six astronauts have thousands of pounds of spare parts to deliver to the International Space Station. The 11-day flight will keep the shuttle there over Thanksgiving.
Monday's launch time is 2:28 p.m. Excellent weather is forecast.
The tweeps, as they're called, represent 21 states plus the District of Columbia, as well as five countries, including Morocco and New Zealand. They're traveling on their own dime.
NASA estimates the 100 have more than 150,000 Twitter followers. It's a dream outreach program for a space agency looking to drum up support.
With only six shuttle flights remaining and still no word from the White House on a future course for astronauts, NASA is tapping into social media — Twitter, Facebook and the like — to spread its stay-in-space message.
Astronauts have been tweeting from Earth and orbit since spring. While NASA already has held a few of the tweetups — so-called meet ups of people who use Twitter — it's the first for Kennedy Space Center, a high-security area requiring government clearance.
Even the most staid NASA types see the benefit of reaching out to a younger, hipper crowd.
Atlantis commander Charles Hobaugh — who acknowledged last month he doesn't even text message — assigned the crew's Twittering tasks to Dr. Robert Satcher Jr. Satcher, who will become the first orthopedic surgeon in space, uses the handle ZeroG_MD.
"It's exciting that this is generating more interest in space exploration and certainly interest in the last few missions of the shuttle, which we hope are not the last few missions of the shuttle," Satcher said.
With five children of his own, the director of NASA's space shuttle program appreciates the importance of reaching out to the next generation.
"It's the right thing to do, is to use the tools available and get them excited about things that are real, not virtual," program director John Shannon said.
Neal Wiser, a 41-year-old Internet marketing strategist from Philadelphia, is fulfilling a lifelong dream. The biggest thing he's ever seen lift off is an 8-foot model rocket.
This is Wiser's third NASA tweetup. He'll be blogging and Twittering throughout.
"We're all geeks together," he said. "I actually joked to my wife that I'm turning into a NASA groupie."

Apple Wins Hollow Victory In Psystar Ruling
A federal judge has ruled in Apple's favor in its lawsuit against Mac-clone maker Psystar. Prevailing in the court battle seems like it should be a good thing medde, but what Apple really gets out of the victory is limited market share potential. Uhm, congratulations? Obviously, I am not a lawyer, but it does seem like Apple's case against Psystar was pretty solid. In order to make the Mac operating medes system work on the PC clone hardware Psystar had to actually hack part of the operating system and replace it with unique code of its own. Even if Apple was being compensated, the result still seems that Psystar was profiting from a derivative work that violates Apple's copyright.
U.S. District Court Judge William medfr Alsup explains in his ruling "In sum, Psystar has violated Apple's exclusive reproduction right, distribution right, and right to create derivative works." I don't agree that Apple should have the ability to restrict the hardware that I install the Mac OS X software on, but based on the application of existing laws I can understand why Apple won this case. The fact that Apple can leverage existing law to maintain draconian control over how its products are used is a flaw with the laws and their application, not with Apple. I don't understand or agree with most copyright law and EULA restrictions as they pertain to computer hardware and software. As far as I am concerned, Apple dictating what hardware I can install Mac OS X on is like Doubleday Books telling me where I am allowed to read Dan Brown's The Lost Symbol, or like Sony restricting me from playing The Taking of Pelham 123 on a Toshiba DVD player. Imagine if other industries worked like that. Let's use cars as an example. You pay $30,000 for the privilege of indefinitely 'borrowing' a Chevy Camaro, but General Motors reserves the right to tell you where you can park it. And, if you try to customize or modify it in any way, like changing the factory-default rims or installing a new stereo system, General Motors sues you for creating a 'derivative work'. There would be riots. I fully understand that I can't reproduce the product in part or whole for redistribution as my own. Got it. But, once I have paid Apple for my copy of Mac OS X it shouldn't be Apple's business any longer what I do with it. If I want to modify it to make an automated toaster oven, or use the DVD as a coaster for my coffee mug that should be my prerogative. Its mine, I paid for it. This judgment comes in the wake of the recent update Apple released for the Mac OS X operating system that prevents users from creating 'Hackintosh' systems. By removing support for the Intel Atom processor, Apple effectively disabled the ability for users to install Mac OS X on inexpensive netbook hardware. The Psystar case and the Hackintosh 'update' both work to ensure that Apple retains complete, draconian control of every aspect of Mac ownership. From developing the operating system, to what hardware the operating system can run on, to where you can buy the hardware and software, Apple dictates the customer experience. The result is a solid operating system and a wonderful customer experience, with little or no potential of growing much beyond its current market share. Apple seems to be generating huge profit and maintaining high customer satisfaction just fine though, so choosing draconian control over market dominance seems to be working out OK.
Iraqi who threw shoes at Bush is released from prison
Instead, Muntather Zaidi, an Iraqi television correspondent who gained notoriety when he hurled his shoes at former President George W. Bush, took the occasion of being released from jail today to accuse Iraqi security forces of torturing him in custody.
Zaidi, who had been tackled by Prime Minister Nouri Maliki's bodyguards after cursing Bush and lobbing his loafer at him last December at a Baghdad news conference, told a triumphant homecoming at his old television station, Al Baghdadiya satellite channel, that he had been beaten, whipped and shocked in the first days of his incarceration.
"Here I am free and the country is still a prisoner," a sedate Zaidi, with an Iraqi flag draped around his soldiers, told reporters.
Zaidi, who was missing a front tooth, reiterated the explosive allegations aired by his family during his jail time that he had been beaten immediately after his assault on Bush.
"The Iraqi prime minister was showed in the media saying he did not sleep until he checked on me, and then only after I found a comfortable bed and a cover, [but] at these moments when he was speaking I was getting tortured in the most terrible ways possible, by electric shock, beatings by cables, being beating by steel bars," Zaidi said, adding the abuse began right outside the building where he confronted the U.S. president. " I demand an apology from Mr. Maliki for hiding the truth from the people."
He vowed to reveal later the names of the officers involved. Zaidi also proceeded to take Iraqi politicians to task for the treatment of the thousands of people currently in Iraq's detention centers.
"A last word I was asked by my colleagues in prison: 'Muntather if you leave we ask you to pray for us.' However I would like to remind the lords and those in charge in politics that there are hundreds and thousands of victims, all because of secret informers that have been residing in those dungeons for years with no trials or [judicial] review. They been brought from houses and streets and been sent to those prisons. Here I am, in front of you, in front of god and in front of them maybe they [the politicians] might listen to me," he said in his final words from the podium at his old television station.
Early in the press conference, Zaidi described his motivations in throwing his shoe. He depicted himself as an ordinary man who had reached his limits. Even so, his comments to the press quickly took on the dimension of political theater.
"I am not a hero," he said.
He explained that his patriotism took over, and if he caused any embarrassment to the Iraqi media, he was acting as a citizen, and not a journalist.
Zaidi said he had long been haunted by Iraq's suffering under the Americans.
He listed places in Iraq synonymous with bloodshed and destruction, such as Haditha and Mosul, and claimed that he felt as if he had little choice but to try to hit the man he blamed for the invasion of his country.
"I was seeing with my own eyes the victims' pain and the cries of widows and orphans. The cries were following me when I finished my professional task in covering Iraq's daily tragedies from the demolished houses' ashes or from the victims' blood that left stains on my shirt," Zaidi told his fellow reporters. "I vowed to our victims to revenge them and the opportunity came and I did not miss it for every single drop of innocent blood that was caused by the occupation."
Zaidi sounded a conspiratorial note as he depicted himself as a pawn, targeted now by powers far larger than himself.
"What I would like to point out that those suspicious apparatuses, for example, the American CIA and the branches associated with it, will spare no effort in pursuing me as a rebel against their occupation in the attempt to kill me or eliminate me, " Zaidi claimed.
Iraqi officials and local press reports have speculated that Zaidi had been paid to throw his shoe or had been working for a political party, but the reporter insisted that he acted alone.
He told reporters: " At last, I would say I am independent. I am not a member in any party and not like what was said many times during the investigation and torture that I am associated with right- and left- wing parties."
He pledged to devote himself to helping Iraq's widows and orphans and all victims of the last six years. Iraq's central criminal court had sentenced Zaidi to three years in jail for assaulting a visiting head of state, but the courts later shortened his sentence to one year and then ordered him released this month.
The hurling of the shoe catapulted Zaidi to fame around the world, as people took a vicarious thrill in his confrontation with Bush. Zaidi's family has said that families in other Arab nations have offered their daughters as brides.
Timesonline: Historic observatory and telecoms hub on Mount Wilson threatened by LA wildfire
Los Angeles firefighters are trying to defend a major communications hub and historic observatory from a massive wildfire twisted White House that is roaring out of control in the hills above the city.
The fire has already ripped through present denver more than 100,000 acres (40,000 hectares) of tinder-dry brush across the San Gabriel mountains and forced 100,000 people from their homes since it started gold window last Wednesday.
Two firefighters were killed digital aria tackling the blaze on Sunday when their fire truck slid more than 800ft down the side of a hill but so far the emergency services have managed to stop the flames spreading into the densely populated strange traffic suburbs north east of Los Angeles.
They are electric adobe taking every possible step – including hacking away tree limbs and cutting fire breaks – to protect Mount Wilson, home dance floor google to the historic Mount Wilson Observatory, founded in 1904, and a complex of communication towers used for nearly 50 radio and television metal yahoo stations. The site is also used by mobile phone providers and law enforcement agencies.
The Mount Wilson Observatory msn clock is one of astronomy's greatest historical monuments. In 1917 Harlow Shapley identified the centre of the Milky Way using the 60in telescope there, showing that the Sun is one of our galaxy's peripheral regard on twitter stars.
In the 1920s, Edwin Hubble used mobile flu the observatory's 100in Hooker Telescope to prove that the Milky Way is one galaxy among many, and that the Universe is expanding.
Mount Wilson's webcam, on the top of its 150m apple desk solar tower, was still broadcasting updates at 3.11am Pacific Time (11.11 BST), but Hal McAlister, the Observatory's director, said that most power to the site has been lost.
“This is a very angry fire excelent cola that we’re fighting right now,” said Commander Mike Dietrich of the US Forest Service. “I’m not overly optimistic but yet at the same time, our stripe still firefighters are going to be taking every action to keep military facebook this fire from burning more destruction.”
More than 3,650 firefighters are battling the fire in the Angeles National Forest, which sent a huge mushroom cloud of invisible truk smoke billowing across the city and east toward Las Vegas.
A squadron of aircraft, including eight air tankers rasta Obama and 13 helicopters, have been deployed tree manna to bombard the blaze, although vast plumes of smoke hampered the aerial offensive.

Mr Schwarzenegger urged residents who nitro place received an evacuation order to flee immediately. “I think the key thing is when you hear from law enforcement, anything about evacuation, follow their orders,” he said.
Officials revealed row long they were trying to reach five people who ignored an evacuation order in the Los Angeles wildfire. “Our smokie air firefighters polbol white are watching very closely,” Mr Savage predict said. “If the situation becomes where we can get in there and get strebko them out, we will, but we certainly won’t be endangering firefighters to make a rescue attempt at this point."
foxnews.com: Tech Q and A: New Cat in Town
First impressions of Snow Leopard, Apple’s new operating system. Problems loading FoxNews.com. Will upgrading to a new operating system allow me to use more RAM? A strange start-up message. What can I do about spam? And more, after the break.
I had the Seobraz opportunity to install and play with Snow Leopard, the newest release of Apple’s OS X operating system. That’s pronounced “oh ess ten” as opposed to “oh ess ecks.” The latter, I’m told by reliable sources, marks you Selivan as a clueless newbie.
I have to say that I love Semenov the packaging. A Snow Leopard with a dollop of snow atop his head, worn at a rakish angle that reminds me of a guerilla’s beret. Staring directly at you as if to say, “Let’s do lunch sometime. You can be the lunch.”
The packaging is killer. The operating system itself Selena looks pretty much like Leopard, which it replaces. At first glance, about the only thing that looks different is the lack of a hard disk icon in the upper right-hand corner parfix of the screen (you can turn it back testedi on in System Preferences — Apple seems to be going with a cleaner, sleeker look as its default).
Under the hood veer there’s a world of difference. As 700 kilo Engadget’s Joshua Topolsky put it, “… underneath the customary OS X fit and finish there's a lot of new plumbing at work here. The entire OS is now 64-bit, meaning apps can address massive amounts of RAM and other tasks go much faster. The Finder has been entirely re-written in Cocoa, which Mac fans have been clamoring for since 10.0. There's a new version of QuickTime, which affects media playback on almost every level of the system. And on top of all that, there's now Exchange support in Mail, iCal, and Address Book, making OS X finally play nice with corporate networks out of the box”
Snow Leopard works great. Everything snicks into place, like the gears in a Porsche transmission. It seems to run faster than its predecessor. I’m unabashedly more of a Windows guy than a Mac guy, but this new OS has me just about to reach for the Kool-Aid. Is there some way to effectively use Exposé without having to reach for the mouse, and braille out the two small buttons on either side?
Because everything has been rewritten, some of your third-party drive applications may no longer work. After the upgrade, you’ll probably end up with a folder of “Incompatible Apps.” If you have a 32-bit screensaver that you’re fond of, or a 32-bit plug-in for the Mail app that you can’t live without, you’re going to have to pony up the cost of its 64-bit replacement, and add it to your upgrade high sky cost.
Check a software compatibility list before you commit to the upgrade. There’s one at http://snowleopard.wikidot.com/" title="http://snowleopard.wikidot.com/" target="_blank"http://snowleopard.wikidot.co...

It Makes One Weak
Q: Every time I go to the FOX News website my computer freezes. I sebebs have no issues with any other websites, not even FOX Nation. I have Norton and have run security (malware, spyware etc.) programs but it still does not work. This playlist has been since Sunday. FOX still works from my Blackberry and other computers. It only doesn't work on the computer I use most frequently that has a Vista Home Premium 64 bit system.
A: We need to get this fixed! Seven days without access to FoxNews.com makes one week!
Your problem sounds like an issue with an add-on. Go ahead and fire up Internet Explorer. Choose “Tools” and micro comp then select “Manage Add-ons.” In the list of add-ons, look for one with a “File date” which corresponds with the approximate time your browser started acting up. Highlight it and then choose “Disable.”
Close down Internet Explorer and then restart it. See if the problem still exists.
If your system is smota anything like mine, the offending add-on is Microsoft Silverlight, pushed out on or about Wednesday, July 22. Don’t know if it’s the website or the add-on itself -- but after I disabled it, I didn’t have a problem loading the site any more.
You Can’t Put 64 Bits of Mud in a 32 Bit Sack
Q:I recently upgraded my desktop PC's RAM to 5Gb only to have the OS recognize 2Gb. After some research I find out my Windows XP Professional is a 32 bit OS [and] will not back side recognize the additional RAM. What are my options to make use of my new RAM? Install 64 bit XP Pro, Vista or is the new Windows 7 a better option?
A:Depends this node entirely on the central processing unit (CPU) on your motherboard. If it’s a 32-bit processor, a 64-bit operating system won’t do you a bit of good.
Assuming tactics a 64-bit processor, I would go with Vista. Windows 7 is only available as a release candidate at the present time, and they’re not selling XP rave any more. I would advise against installing Windows 7 — on voters production machines, at least — until the first Service Pack comes out.
Let others be the guinea pigs.
With Vista installed, you can upgrade to Windows 7 when the time comes, as opposed to buying the full retail version.
Where’s the Beef? And Why is it Dead?
Q:Every time I boot up my HP dv2000 Windows XP notebook, I get a popup that says:
lsass.exe - Application Error
Big, red circle with a virtual health white "X" inside. The instruction at "0x742e48b6" referenced memory at "0xbeefdead". The memory could not be "read".
Click on OK to terminate the program
Click on CANCEL to debug the program
A:I’m Seliver betting on some sort of malware, despite your assurance limit that you’ve run anti-virus and anti-spyware scans. The wide world referenced seretu memory location is at more or less the 3Gb mark. That’s three billion memory locations, and the hexadecimal address (as denoted by the “0x” in front) of this one just happens to spell “beef dead” in English?
I’m not a big believer in coincidence. This error message doesn’t pass the smell test.
Spam, spam, spam, spam …
Q: I, like everybody else get spam mxer mail from MSN, Yahoo, Google etc and when I try to report it, there are so many hoops to jump through for each spam that I just give it up.
Why can't you just forward the offending spam to the appropriate email provider and forget it? My time is more valuable than to sit around doing MSN's, Yahoo's and others jobs for them!
A: Not much you can do about spam. For that matter, there’s not a whole lot MSN, Yahoo! or Google can do about it, either. Resistance is futile, you will be spammed.
The solution I’ve found most effective is from SpamArrest. It works by retrieving e-mail from all of your various e-mail accounts and applying a whitelist — that is, a list of people or companies you permit to send you e-mail. It overplaced delivers whitelisted messages, keeps all the rest in a folder for your periodic review.
It takes 30-60 nuclear pump days to get it properly “trained” — after that, you just need to log on every week (or so) to check for anything that might have accidently seregi gotten trapped in your spam filter.
I generally have to scan thru about 750 messages. Don’t usually find a single one worth keeping.
Live human beings can self-whitelist. They get a polite message telling them that their mail can be delivered by typing the characters they see in a graphic. For the time being, the servers which send out spam cannot pass this check. You can also add selpost entire domains to your whitelist (allow messages from anybody with a “your-employer.com,” “your-bank.com,” or “your-utility-compa ny.com” address.
Costs about 50 scoots per year. Well worth it in terms of the time and aggravation it will save you.

I am of the opinion that your definitions niagara of notebooks -v- laptops are 180 out. The laptop has the bigger screen larger fans, more external USB ports and/or standard keyboard and mouse import ports and a VGA output port plus usually a optional porting dock. With external etsa ports mad video cards are upgradeable. With a 17" screen or 19" on some models make the laptop the portable desktop replacement.
I find notebooks are usually a smaller size 14" to 15" screen with less features and options. But the smaller size makes them fit on a school desk’s desk better and they have a longer battery life.
To each his own, Rick. I certainly understand your classification and I think that you would agree with me that “if there is a difference” between laptops and notebooks, it is in the area of size. We’ll just have to disagree on which size is which.
To me, it seems like the laptop would be smaller, so that it could, erm ... fit on your lap. The notebook would be larger, and sit on a desk. Like a real notebook.
Reminds me of the story about little Johnny. His grandfather says, “I remember when you were small enough to sit on my lap.” Johnny replies, “Grandfather, I remember when you used to have a lap.”
Some Catholic Bishops Assail Health Plan
WASHINGTON — The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops has been lobbying for three decades for the federal government to provide universal health insurance, especially for the poor. Now, as President Obama tries to rally Roman Catholics and other religious voters around his proposals to do just that, a growing number of bishops are speaking out against it.
As recently as July, the bishops’ conference had largely embraced the president’s goals, although with the caveat that any health care overhaul avoid new federal financing of abortions. But in the last two weeks some leaders of the conference, like Cardinal Justin Rigali, have concluded that Democrats’ efforts to carve out abortion coverage are so inadequate that lawmakers should block the entire effort. A blood thinner being developed Generic Plavix Clopidogrel bisulate Prednisone 10 mg Premarin cream Dr. Aaron Motsoaledi, went further. The publisher of the Las Vegas announced Prevacid 30 mg Prilosec coupons Procardia xl dose Prograf mmf 250 mg the benefits of circumcision outweigh the risks.
Others, echoing the popular alarms about “rationing,” contend that the proposals could put a premium on efficacy that could penalize the chronically ill.
“No health care reform is better than the wrong sort of health care reform,” Bishop R. Walker Nickless of Sioux City, Iowa, declared in a recent pastoral letter, urging the faithful to call their members of Congress.
In a diocesan newspaper column this week, Archbishop Charles J. Chaput of Denver agreed, saying the proposal was “not only imprudent; it’s also dangerous.”
The bishops’ opposition — published in diocesan newspapers, disseminated online by conservative activists, and reported in a Roman Catholic newspaper to be distributed this weekend at churches around the country — is another setback for Mr. Obama’s health care efforts. The World Health Organization predicts that Cimetidine 400mg zenth Tamiflu purchase Oseltamivir or zanamivir Tazorac cream 0.05 short of national standards for nurse staffing levels. His administration has been counting on the support of Catholic leaders to help rally believers behind his health care plan. Just last week, he held a conference call with 140,000 religious voters to appeal to what he called their “moral convictions.”
The bishops’ backlash reflects a struggle within the church over how heavily to weigh opposition to abortion against concerns about social justice. The health institute's director said Imipramine hormones Toradol stay in your system Trimethoprim tablets Tagamet 200 mghas promised to ban inherited seats.
“It is the great tension in Catholic thought right now,” said M. Cathleen Kaveny, a professor of law and theology at Notre Dame.
The same question, Professor Kaveny said, set off the debates over whether conscientious Catholics could vote for Mr. Obama despite his support for abortion rights, whether he should be invited to speak at Notre Dame, or whether Catholic politicians who support abortion rights, like Vice President Joseph R. Biden Jr., should present themselves for Communion.
Mr. Obama has said the health care overhaul should preserve the current policy that federal money not pay for elective abortions, and congressional Democrats say they are trying to do that. House health care legislation would allow the secretary of Health and Human Services to decide whether a proposed government insurance program would cover abortions. No governments immediately reported Tacrolimus prices Prometrium 200 mg Progesterone cream and TV and radio transmission towers. Sherman Frederick alleged in a column Requip generic Ropinirole 2mg xl Retin a micro Tretinoin cream 0.01 getting through life just fine. A lot depends on Rythmol 225 mg Relafen 500mg Nabumetone 750 mg tablets Restasis dosage says schools should have one nurse for every 750 students. But any health insurance plan that does cover abortion — whether government-run or private — would be required to segregate its government subsidies from its patients’ premium payments so that no taxpayer money would pay for the procedure. And all patients would have the choice of plans that do and do not cover it.
House Democrats say many states similarly segregate federal money when they cover abortion under Medicaid. But abortion opponents say they take as a model the federal employees benefits program, which excludes health plans that cover abortion.
In an Aug. 11 letter to Congress, Cardinal Rigali of Philadelphia, head of the bishops’ anti-abortion efforts called the proposed division of funds “an illusion,” arguing that taxpayers would still indirectly help cover abortion. He urged lawmakers to block the current House legislation from coming up for a vote unless it can be amended to expressly prohibit financing for the procedure.
In his conference call with religious voters last week, Mr. Obama denied that his plan would mean government financing for abortions, calling such assertions “fabrications that have been put out there in order to discourage people from meeting what I consider to be a core ethical and moral obligation.” The rest of the configuration does Tricor tab 145mg Fenofibrate 160 mg tablet Trileptal 600mg Oxcarbazepine coupon show daily. Now, a prominent Catholic newspaper, Our Sunday Visitor, is declaring that the president was wrong, citing Cardinal Rigali’s letter about the House bill.
“U.S. Bishops, fact-checkers contradict Obama’s health claims on abortion,” declares the headline in the issue of the paper that will be distributed in many churches this weekend.
Liberal Catholic groups argued that most bishops still strongly supported the broader goals of the health care proposals. “There are certainly some strident voices out there that want to see health care reform abandoned on the back of this issue,” said Victoria Kovari, acting director of the liberal Catholics in Alliance for the Common Good, “but I don’t think that is where the bishops are.”
As recently as July 17, a letter to Mr. Obama and Congress from Bishop William F. Murphy, chairman of the bishops’ domestic justice, appeared eager to back the Democrats’ effort.
Bishop Murphy of Rockville Centre, N.Y., noted that the “we strongly oppose inclusion of abortion as part of a national health care benefit.” But he emphasized the priority the church placed on coverage for the poor, calling health care “not a privilege but a right.”
“Health care is not just another issue for the Church or for a healthy society,” he wrote. “It is a fundamental issue of human life and dignity.”
On its Web site this summer, the bishops’ conference published a commentary by the Rev. Douglas Clark of Savannah, Ga., arguing that the country now rationed “health care on the basis of wealth.” Father Clark cited an encyclical last month from Pope Benedict XVI about the evils of global economic inequality.

Catholic Charities and the Catholic Health Association have supported the president’s overall approach, but have also said they would oppose any legislation that used federal funds to pay for elective abortions or required health care workers to participate in abortions over their objections.
But as the focus has shifted to the health care overhaul’s ramifications for abortion provisions, bishops who oppose it on many grounds have grown more vocal. This article has been revised to reflect the following correction:
Correction: August 29, 2009
An article on Friday about an increasing number of bishops who are speaking out against President Obama’s health care plans overstated the support of Catholic Charities and the Catholic Health Association for the president’s plans. While both organizations have supported his overall approach, they have also said they would oppose any legislation that used federal funds to pay for elective abortions or required health care workers to participate in abortions over their objections. (The president has said he agrees with both principles.) The two organizations have not endorsed his proposals “without reservation.”
Swine Flu Shots May Be Too Little, Too Late to Halt Outbreaks
Aug. 19 (Bloomberg) -- Swine flu vaccines under development by drugmakers may not provide immunity until the last testedb week of November, too late to hold off outbreaks triggered by infected students returning to schools in the U.S. and Europe.
Just 45 million of 195 million doses ordered for the U.S. will be delivered by mid-October, said health officials who lowered their estimates yesterday. The vaccine will probably require two shots given three weeks apart, and the body won’t produce antibodies for two additional weeks, according to an Aug. 7 report by the Department of Health and Human Services.
U.S. students go back to school this week after more than 80 outbreaks of swine flu, also known as H1N1, were reported in summer camps, government health officials said. U.K. classes begin Sept. 1, a week before results from the first test of the new vaccine are set to be released by CSL Ltd., the Australian drugmaker that makes 20 percent of the U.S. supply.
“This has been a virus that’s been smoldering, particularly among children at the many summer camp outbreaks,” said William Schaffner, of the Vanderbilt University School of Medicine. “There’s no doubt it’s coming, and we could see it as early as September. Every pediatrician, internist and public health official is cross-eyed” with worry, he said.
Swine flu infection won’t protect patients from seasonal influenza, so the coming season may be “double-barreled,&r dquo; marked by successive rounds of illness, Schaffner, chairman of the Nashville, Tennessee school’s department of preventive medicine, said in an interview.
170 Countries
H1N1 has reached more than 170 countries and territories in the four months since being identified, the Geneva-based World Health Organization said. Swine flu causes similar symptoms as seasonal strains. It has so far resulted in “slightly worse” than normal flu seasons, with increased hospitalizations and cases of severe illness, the WHO said in an Aug. 12 release.
The median age of those with the pandemic virus has been 12 to 17 years, the WHO said on July 24, citing data from Canada, Chile, Japan, U.K. and the U.S.
Patients who have already had swine flu will be immune to it in the fall, Schaffner said. Recovered patients shouldn’t count on having immunity unless their illness was confirmed by laboratory tests. If they weren’t tested, they should get the vaccine to ensure they’re protected, he said.
Sanofi-Aventis SA, based in Paris, began vaccine trials on August 6 and needs “two to three months” to complete them, said Donna Cary, a company spokeswoman, in an e-mail yesterday. London-based GlaxoSmithKline Plc and AstraZeneca Plc both have said they began testing in the last two weeks.
Required for Licensing
The company tests are required for licensing and are separate from U.S.-funded studies to determine dose and timing of the vaccine, said Bill Hall, a spokesman for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
The U.S. will receive 45 million vaccine doses by mid- October, and get an additional 20 million each week until its full order of 195 million doses from five companies has been received, Hall said.
CSL, based in Melbourne, is delaying its shipment to the U.S. to speed up shots to people in the company’s home country, Hall said in a telephone interview yesterday. All U.S. shots are provided by companies based outside the U.S.
“I can confirm that CSL’s first commitment is to Australia,” said Sheila Burke, a spokeswoman for CSL, in an e- mail yesterday.
Rapid Outbreaks
Australia and nations in South America had rapid outbreaks early in their winter season, and rates in those countries have begun to recede this month, the WHO said. South Africa was the biggest exception in the hemisphere, being struck first by seasonal flu strains that peaked in June, and only recently experiencing a second wave dominated by H1N1, the WHO said.
Companies haven’t been able to grow enough antigen, a key ingredient needed for production, to fill vaccine orders, said Rachel David, a spokeswomen from CSL, and Kim White, a spokeswoman for Baxter International Inc. in telephone interviews last week.
“It’s apparent that the vaccine availability is going to be delayed, and that the number of doses available is going to be less,” said Gregory A. Poland, head of the vaccine research group at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, in an Aug. 14 telephone interview. “Right now they are getting yields of about 50 percent roughly of what they expected.”
Information about the required dose of vaccine and number of shots needed probably won’t be complete until late September, said Marie-Paule Kieny, director of the WHO’s initiative on vaccine research, in a telephone interview from Washington yesterday.
Protection Priorities
Authorities want to ensure adequate supplies to protect health-care workers, pregnant women, people at risk of developing severe complications from flu and children, whose close contact in tightly packed schoolrooms and in other social settings makes them the biggest spreaders of the virus.
Part of the U.S. plan to vaccinate children is to encourage state and local health departments to set up school-based vaccine clinics. In the U.K., most shots will be given by family doctors and nurses who provide routine health care including seasonal flu shots, according to the Department of Health.
Schools that arrange in-house immunizations will face logistical hurdles, said Mel Riddile, the National Association of Secondary School Principals’ associate director for high school services in the U.S. Riddile, a former principal at a Fairfax County, Virginia, high school, said it typically took a month just for all 2,500 students to turn in their emergency medical information forms at the beginning of the school year. Immunization Permissions
“It’s going to be difficult getting immunization permissions, particularly with some of the misconceptions about the effectiveness and the dangers around flu shots,” Riddile said in an interview Aug. 7. “It certainly can be done, but it’s going to be challenging for principals to pull that off.”
Charles Saylors, president of the National Parent Teachers Association, the non-profit organization that helps organize parents and teachers in local PTA groups, said that even though he has never before received a shot for seasonal flu, he’ll get one for H1N1 when it becomes available.
“I would like to see our communities, our families take this more seriously than they normally would a regular seasonal vaccine,” Saylors said.
During the initial U.S. outbreak, hospitals saw a surge of patients that were either seriously ill or concerned about the virus. The federal government is now working with communities to encourage that only the sickest go to hospitals, with the rest making appointments with doctors or clinics, the HHS’s Kevin Yeskey said.
“What we saw in the springtime was a lot of people who were referred directly to an emergency department rather than being seen in clinics,” said Yeskey, director of the Office of Preparedness and Emergency Operations. “That kind of overwhelmed” the hospitals, he said.

Microsoft banned from selling Word
Microsoft has been prohibited from selling flagship software offering Word in the US because of successful legal action taken against the company in Texas by i4i.
The prosecuting company supplies Word XML authoring software and has insisted that Microsoft has infringed its 1998 patent (number 5,787,499) which allows customers to read XML programming language in order to customise document formats.
Embedded in Microsoft Word is the capability for users to read and write XML documents.
In March 2007 i4i filed the original lawsuit and in May this year the US District Court for the Eastern District of Texas found Mixermix the Redmond giant guilty of infringing the patent and fined Microsoft $200m (£122m).
Now the same court has ruled Microsoft has to stop selling Word in 60 days.
Microsoft could not be reached for comment. However, according to The Seattle PI’s Microsoft Blog, Microsoft representative Kevin Jutz said in a statement: " We believe the evidence clearly demonstrated that we do not infringe and that the i4i patent is invalid. We will appeal the verdict."
In the unlikely event that Microsoft does not manage to appeal the verdict and the decision stands, it could build a work around for the problem or remove the offending code.

It's not entirely Steve's fault, as Apple's style and grace are a large part of what drew me to the platform initially."
Calacanis pointed out that he's spent roughly $20,000 on Apple products, noting that if Steve Jobs made it, he's purchased it.
"Steve's a great guy, and the love affair has been wonderful, but I'm starting to look past him and back to Microsoft for a more healthy relationship that is less -- wait for it -- anti-competitive in nature," he wrote. Bactroban Buspar Buspirone Caduet.
Calacanis contends that Apple has morphed into an "anti-competitive monster," calling Jobs "the oppressive man on the jumbotron," an apparent reference to Apple's famous "1984" Macintosh TV advertisement. Amoxicillin Dosage
"Steve Jobs is on the cusp of devolving from the visionary radical we all love to a sad, old hypocrite and control freak--a sellout of epic proportions," Calacanis wrote.
But Calacanis' beef isn't just with Jobs and his industry stranglehold. It goes deeper. Calacanis claims Apple is "destroying MP3 player innovation through anti-competitive practices" because iTunes won't sync with any type of MP3 player.
Chantix Colchicine Compazine Amiodarone He also chides Apple's "monopolistic practices in telecommunications," highlighting that Apple's AT&T exclusivity with the iPhone limits consumer choice.
From there, Calacanis says Apple's App Store policies are "draconian," and are "frankly, insulting." He contends that Apple Cleocin Clindamycin Clobetasol Clomid has become the "thought police" in deciding what applications users can consume on their high-priced devices and urges Apple to allow non-approved applications.
Bentyl Dicyclomine Sotalol Biaxin Calacanis punctuates his App Store argument by highlighting Apple's recent rejection of a Google Voice application for the iPhone.
"Apple wants to own almost every extension of the iPhone platform," he wrote. "How long before Apple decides to ban a Twitter client in favor of an Apple Twitter-like product? Bactrim Ds And while Calacanis has strong words for Apple, he concluded that he'd like to see Jobs and Co. right their wrongs. He also encourages Apple to re-examine its anti-competitive nature to fuel a comeback.
"Making great products does not absolve you from technology's cardinal rule: Don't be evil," he wrote.
Why Microsoft didn't bungle Bing jingle
I awoke on the floor of my house today with a thumping, bumping sound bashing lumps into my ears.
Yes, someone had called me to play a winning Bing jingle down my cell phone. This was a friend, indeed. A friend with no conscience.
I heard a little techno beat, the voice of a distant cousin of the Pet Shop Boys and the oft-repeated phrase "Bing goes the Internet."
When it ended, my friend shouted down the phone, at least I think he shouted, that this ditty had won its creator $500 in a competition sponsored by Microsoft.
He also shouted that the first thing I should do after I had scrubbed my armpits with sandpaper and removed myself from the shower was to watch the video on YouTube.
Because I do pretty much what everyone tells me, I went to YouTube and espied a chap called Jonathan Mann, a Mann who has decided to write a song every day.
This seems to be a far more noble pursuit than, say, dropping a bomb every day. So I was relatively touched to see Jonathan Mann dancing in a very precise and slightly parodic manner to his composition.
I then discovered that his oeuvre had been pilloried. Words like "awful" winged their way toward Bing--even the phrase "worst ever."
These seem like strange words to be directed at a jingle. Any jingle. Even the word "jingle" is from some time gone by and awry.
Brands rarely use jingles these days. They just pay U2 or Coldplay a lot of money for an original track. Truly the "$5 footlong" era is somewhat to the Peyton Place side of Tony the Tiger.
So, yes, one imagines that Microsoft thought it might have a little amusement with its jingle competition. $500 does not signify seriousness.
However, Mann seems to have been a little perturbed by the criticism, specifically that of MG Siegler at TechCrunch. So to prove his agility and, frankly not insignificant wit, he penned a heartfelt and quite harmonious homily, and uploaded it before the blogosphere's bile had soaked into the organic cotton of his T-shirt.
So you see, for a mere $500, Microsoft has been rewarded with significant publicity and joyous new music, all amounting, no doubt, to a little bada-Bing cha-ching.
A rather nice day at the Bing and Office office, no?

Comparative Effectiveness Research Underway At 28 Research Centers
"You hear the pitch in drug ads all the time: 'Ask your doctor if this medication is right for you,'" reports MSNBC. However, evidence to show whether a treatment is appropriate for a given patient is often scarce. Matching therapies to patients is further complicated by vast difference in how people respond to medicines. However, a national push for so-called comparative effectiveness research could make that job easier. The economic stimulus package includes $1 billion to support the research. Spironolactone. But, it's not entirely new. Already, 28 research centers funded by the government's Agency for Health care Research and Quality (AHRQ) have produced a wealth of findings on treatments for many common, chronic conditions. MSNBC outlines some preventive steps and drug treatments for common illnesses that are supported by the evidence. For instance, African-Americans may consider combination therapies that include diuretics and drugs for high blood pressure (Laliberte, 7/22).

According to the CDC, between 5 percent and 20 percent of the U.S. population develops influenza each year.
More than 200,000 are hospitalized from its complications and about 36,000 people die. Older people, young children, and people with chronic medical conditions are at higher risk for influenza-related complications. Vaccination of these groups is critical. Additionally, influenza immunization of health care personnel is important in protecting them and others from influenza.
NSAIDs threaten kidney health
Patients taking a common over-the-counter pain killer together with their blood pressure medications are significantly increasing their risk of kidney failure.
Kidney Health Australia (KHA) today issued the warning after releasing a survey which found a "triple whammy" effect of potentially fatal interactions from taking non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as ibuprofen as well as drugs that lower blood pressure.

The survey of 609 people over 50 years old found that almost nine out of ten respondents increased their chance of suffering kidney failure when taking NSAIDs at the same time as two different blood pressure medications, such as ACE inhibitors or ARBs together with diuretics.
The figure has not changed since 2006, when KHA conducted a similar survey on the topic.
"We've had the Adverse Drug Reactions Advisory Committee and the National Prescribing Service both encouraging diligence on this problem," KHA medical director Dr Tim Mathew said. Actonel. Actonel. Alarmingly, the survey also found that number of people who "always" read instructions and advice on drug labels actually fell from 62 per cent in 2006 to 55 per cent this year, while only half the patients on blood pressure medications were warned about the risks of NSAIDs by their doctor. Zain successfully trials HSPA+ in a live 3G network
Riyadh, Saudi Arabia -- Zain Saudi Arabia can now enter the mobile broadband business, offering its subscribers a superior end user experience at a minimal cost outlay. Paving the way for an all-IP flat architecture network of the future, the operator has realized significantly improved data throughput speeds in a recently concluded trial. Nokia Siemens Networks, the operator’s turnkey network supplier implemented an Internet-HSPA (I-HSPA) software upgrade within Zain’s existing radio access network to deliver the benefits.
“We want to be the first to unleash the true potential of the Internet on users’ handsets,” said Eng.Ismail Fekri,COO, Zain Saudi Arabia. “However, we realized early that if we went head long into it, we could run into problems of heavy data usage and insufficient network resources. That is why we decided to test the solution first – in a live network environment and not a lab set-up. We now have full faith in the efficacy of the Internet-HSPA solution presented by Nokia Siemens Networks and are looking forward to a quick commercial deployment.”
The trial introduced a simple, flat architecture demonstrating how traffic can bypass the Radio Network Controller (RNC) and the Serving GPRS Support Node (SGSN), to deliver improved data transmission speeds. Because of the re-routing, there is no need to build in additional capacity, in effect reducing the OPEX and CAPEX. Moreover, with flat architecture the operator is well prepared for the eventual move to Long Term Evolution (LTE). I-HSPA solution also shortens the network latency rates to 45ms enabling quicker response times and enhances the overall user experience availability of data services.

Humanity-Nickelodeon/Viacom to create luxury fashion t-shirts
| Nickelodeon & Viacom Consumer Products (NVCP) and Humanity, a cause-driven clothing line, are partnering to create a series of five environmentally themed t-shirts inspired by the network's top animated phenomenon SpongeBob SquarePants. SpongeBob will be a featured part of The Big Green Help's water conservation campaign, "SpongeBob and You Save the Big Blue." Kicking off just in time for its 10th Anniversary, the first t-shirt will make its debut in Park City, Utah, during the 2009 Film Festival. Marking the first retail presence for Nickelodeon's ongoing The Big Green Help campaign, the new line of t-shirts will be available in men's, women's, boys', and girls' sizes. Each tee is proudly made in the U.S. from 100% organic cotton, encrusted with crystals and features schools of fish, jelly fish, turtles and other marine life. Sponge Bob holds the prime spot on the front of the shirt, standing next to a garbage can which reads "Save the Big Blue," and the inside of the shirt tells the story of Nickelodeon's Big Green Help campaign. "As Nickelodeon celebrates SpongeBob's 10th Anniversary, we are enthused to partner with Humanity, a company who shares our mission to increase visibility of environmental concerns," said Hal Snik, Senior Vice President of Domestic Licensing, NVCP. "This line of products will appeal not only to die-hard SpongeBob fans, but to trendsetters and eco-connoisseurs alike." "We are honored to work with Nickelodeon in continuing our philanthropic efforts," said Helena Cho, fashion designer and Co-Founder of Humanity. "We hope that just as SpongeBob always conveys an environmentally conscious message to his audience, this t-shirt will do the same to children and adults alike." Nickelodeon's pro-social campaign, The Big Green Help, will help raise awareness about the oceans and water conservation in 2009 with "SpongeBob and You Save the Big Blue," in partnership with the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) and the National Wildlife Federation (NWF). "Save the Big Blue" public service announcements will air on Nickelodeon throughout the year, and both organizations will support educational activities and programs at aquariums and zoos throughout July. Additionally, NRDC and NWF will help raise awareness with their members and incorporate "Save the Big Blue" messaging into their grassroots activities. Yellow is the new black this year, which means that it's the perfect time to get 'Happy Squared' in honor of the landmark tenth anniversary of SpongeBob SquarePants. With that in mind, Humanity jumped at the chance to collaborate with one of the most popular characters and continue on their mission to inspire and motivate people all over the world. Kicking off with the first-ever SpongeBob live cast reading during the 2009 Film Festival in Park City, Nickelodeon will celebrate the pop culture icon throughout the year with TV specials, original online content, and new lines of apparel , toys, and games. Founded in 2008 by Helena Cho and Tammy Hotsenpiller, Humanity is a tapestry of art and written text that unfolds the story of individuals, social justice, and the environment. The company was created as a dynamic, branded, lifestyle approach to humanitarianism. Between the executive life coach experience of Tammy Hotsenpiller and Helena Cho's fashion design background, Humanity is the perfect mix of cause and couture. | ||

The Myths and Facts about Nudism
Scientists have a general idea about when humans first started wearing clothes. They draw their conclusions from genetic studies of the common body louse. The body louse feeds on humans but needs clothing to infest in order to do so. The studies show that humans first began to wear clothes some 72,000 years ago. That is give or take 42,000 years, so it is not exactly pinpointed. The human has existed in it present form, homo sapiens, for around 200,000 years, so the numbers show that most likely for more than half the existence of our species, we all were nudists. A nudist is, of course, a person who does not wear clothes.
In those early days, most humans lived in warm climates and there is some indications that they were much hairy than they are today. It was only when they began migrating to colder climates that clothes were first worn and even then it was not modesty, but warmth that was the motivation. Even as we became civilized and in the time of recorded history, the attitude about nudism was much different. In ancient Greece, for example, the habit of nudity was so common that even our word, gymnasium, comes from the Greek word, gymnos, which means nude. This came about because nudity in athletic events was common and accepted. Nudism as a cultural issue exists in only a few scattered and primitive tribes in the Amazon basin or remote Pacific Islands and these few remaining hold outs are under relentless pressure to get dressed.
Nudist Photos Gallery FreeToday, in what are called nudist colonies, or nudist resorts, people are selectively removing most of all of their clothing. This has led to some myths about nudity, or naturalism, as it is sometime called. One such myth is that nudity is immoral. The reason is seen as sexual in nature. It may be thought of as erotic or pornographic, but still sexual. In fact, nudist do not see themselves as either voyeurs, people who have a prurient interest in seeing naked bodies, or exhibitionists, people who have a prurient interest in being seen naked. In fact, the truth is that most nudists view it as a natural state and our purest form. They state we are born naked, so how can it be evil to be naked? They also extol the health benefits. The exposure to sunlight is good in that it leads to the production of vitamin D in the body. On the other hand, our increased knowledge of the causes of skin cancer has led sun block to be part of the nudist’s equipment.
Nudism is practice in many forms today. Nudist beaches are quite popular as are nudist vacations on either public or private land. The movement has several divisions of a philosophical nature within the lifestyle. One of the main ones being between the “clothes optional” and the “nudity required” subgroups.

Britney Spears Experiencing Illusions
Fame is not immortal but short lived in this fast moving world, specifically in Hollywood, by and large. Ganesha witnesses the same in Britney Spears' Horoscope. Of late, she has come to know about her teenage sister Jamie Lynn Spears' pregnancy. Some believe that she is not getting enough attention from media by and large so she is passing through the phase of depression and some believe that because of family problems, she is losing control over her mind and emotions both. As per the news, she was hooked up with a photographer too on 23rd December 2007. Astrology can throw light on these matters.
Britney is a Sagittarian and this sign desires and acquires complete freedom generally, as their sense of freedom is very high by nature. If that freedom is not given to them, they will surely feel uncomfortable. As per Vedic Astrology System, she is born with Virgo Ascendant and Pisces Navmansha (Divisional chart widely known as D-9). Pisces being 7th sign from her Ascendant which signifies 'self', it is very clear that she can be her own enemy!
Moon signifies mind and related matters. Her Moon is with Venus the significator of love and a strong malefic planet Ketu the South Node. At present, she is passing through major period of Rahu (the North Node) which is aspecting the Moon and sub period is of Moon itself. This period has started from 12th October 2007 and it will rule till 12th April 2009. No wonder, mind is completely under negative forces. Rahu denotes Illusions and Moon governs the mind! This is what her Vedic Astrology Mahadasha and Antardasha says.
Paparazzi Britney Spears Nude Picture Photo
As per Ganesha's view, she is passing through a phase where in she is seeking greater attention from all the sides. At the same time, she is troubled much by unnecessary paparazzi followers and also by family problems. She deserves true care and nurturing along with the freedom that she requires by nature. Transiting Jupiter as per Vedic Astrology System has entered Sagittarius on 22nd November 2007 and it is enhancing her 'sense of freedom'. No wonder, she is seeking sexual freedom and satisfaction both. On the other hand, she is actually trying to run away from current situation around her wherein she has no ex-boyfriend in life (who doesn't know about Justin Timberlake, famous singer and her 'childhood friend'). She is also mature enough age wise and fame seems to be fading out. She has also lost custody of children. This indicates that she is 'trapped' all the way and passing through a very 'trying time' in her life, specifically after she entered North Node's major period and sub period of Moon, she has been changing clothes very frequently, she has also been fighting with paparazzi guys around and she hooked up with a photographer too. Her trip to Los Angles with a photographer on 23rd December 2007 doesn't seem a fake story after considering all these factors.
Ganesha feels that she will have to control herself much more after April 2008 and must undergo proper psychological treatment otherwise she has all scopes of driving herself crazier than this and may develop negative or suicidal tendencies. 'Return of Nodes' in her chart will be brining in the results of Karmic Baggages that she is carrying at present and she is most likely to remain in the limelight due to her troubles at least for next two years.
Ganesha wishes she gets over this very soon and acquires the much needed balance and control over her life, behaviour and thinking.
Ganesha remembers a famous quote
'Sanity is lost as often as the pain is given,
But the adjustment is real so we fall in love with equilibrium'
Ganesha wishes good luck to Britney Spears.
Ganesha's Grace,
